Mark Churchill has been making pottery for more than 25 years. Inspired by traditional Japanese craftsmanship, his collection features hand-made, quality stoneware and porcelain. Each firing is completely unique and the subtle differences in each piece are regarded not as imperfections, but proof of life. Mark strives to create work that is functional and soulful. Materials for clay and glazes are sourced from local ranches in Ojai, CA.

In addition to dinnerware, vessels, vases, and bowls, Mark is also available as a collaborator to develop custom work for designers.

PROCESS:

Mark Churchill ceramics are made by hand using stoneware and porcelain clays. Our kiln is fired with gas and originally belonged to Otto Heino. The glazes are made from scratch and incorporate local materials, such as red clay, combined with ash from oak and pine.

After the glaze is applied, the work is fired to 2340 degrees.  At this temperature, the dialogue between the kiln and the work takes over. The clay itself becomes vitrified so that even the unglazed areas are impervious to water. The glazes become fluid and fuse with the clay, and the oxygen starved flames surround the work giving warmth and depth.
